Will Dempsey Fight Again?
RICKARD SAYS "NO” EX-CHAMPION UNDECIDED After further conferences with Jack Dempsey, “Tex” Rickard said he could announce positively that Jack will not engage in any further ring contests. The New York afternoon papers accept the news as “Dempsey’s passing from the fistic arena.” Everything points to Tunney defending his title in June, and fighting again in September, no matter what the outcome of the June engagement may be. If Tom Heeney shows any notable improvement this month, Rickard is very favourably disposed to send him against Tunney in London for the June engagement. Dempsey’s Fortune “The Miami newspaper has the story right,” said Rickard when shown a local journal with an elaborate statement that Dempsey was off the promoter’s list as a possible opponent for Tunney, not only in June o’ September, but for all time. Rickard added, “Dempsey is worth £300,000, so who can blame him for not wanting to fight again? With his capital, Dempsey can make a fortune yearly doing nothing.” “Perhaps I’ll Fight” Seen at Lbs Angeles, Dempsey said: “That’s fine, and O.IC. with me, if my injured eye muscle improves, I may fight again or may not."
