WANGANUI WINNERS

HOW MANDANE WON THE CUP

WANGANUI, Thursday. The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was opened to-day under brilliant conditions. The attendance was good and the course in splendid order after much rain yesterday. The totalisator handled £23,076, against £25,891 last year, a decrease of £2,815. FAVOURITE WINS WELL Seven faced the starter in the opening event, the Maiden Race, King Mart £557 being made a slightly better favourite than Thrift, £541, while Double Mint £ 223 was next in favour, the last-named moving short in his preliminary. When they were let go, Vexillum began best, and led out from Iving 'Mart, Marica, Service, War Wings, Thrift and Double Mint, and at the half-mile the favourite had gone to the front, where he was attended by Vexillum, Thrift, War Wings, Service, with Double Mint tailing the field. King Mart and Thrift turned for home together, followed by War Wings, Vexillum, Service and Marica. Once straightened up the favourite came away and stalling off Service won by three-quarters of a length. Thrift, having her first race, was nearly two lengths away third, with War Wings next. Then came Vexillum, Double Mint and Marica. A SURPRISE BY WAICULLUS. Lady Limond £952 and Tiega £66s monopolised the market in the Stewards’ Handicap, and there was a good drop to Ruanui £317, Hipo £260 and Waicullus £298. A god start saw Ruanui go to the front and lead out of the straight from Civility, Hipo, Rouex, Lady Limond, Tiega and Damaris. crossing the top Wiacullus ran up to

Ruanui, the pair turning for home with Lady Limond handy, and Civility, Hipo, Damaris, Rouex, Tiega and Hallownoon following in that order. Ruanui was soon done with, and Waicullus was called upon to stall off the determined late challenges by Lady Limond and Tiega, the first mentioned winning by a neck from Lady Limond, with Tiega a head away. Ruanui and Civility were close up, with Hipo, Damaris, Hallownoon and Rouex following. ELYSIANOR WON FROM START TO FINISH Nucleus was backed down to a short price in the five-horse field in the Westmere Hurdles, being entrusted with £770 against £305 invested on the actual winner, Elysianor. These two went out quickest from the barrier, and then ran together for most of the journey, the pair passing the stands four lengths clear of Matu, with Pink Rose and Kilburn three lengths further away.' At each fence Elysianor was outjumping Nucleus. Along the back Kilburn went up and was with Nucleus at the home turn, but they were three lengths behind Elysianor, who went on to score comfortably by three lengths from Kilburn, with Matu a length and a-half away. Nucleus, who blundered badly at the final obstacle, was fourth and Pink Rose last. A GREAT RACE The Victory Hack Handicap provided a thrilling finish, five out of the eight runners flashing over the line with only half a length separating them. Capitulation £679 wound up a good favourite, with Ladykiller £ 615 and Sovena £374 at the head of the remaining quotation, and it was the outsider, Discourse, £162, that led the bunch home. At the start Royal Acre was knocked sideways, and Whisogne was rushed to the front, piloting the field out of the straight. Some Lad, Sovena, Royal Acre, Ladykiller, Capitulation, Barryanda, Discourse following in that order. On the bend Some Lad took charge, and at the five furlongs was just ahead of Whisogne, Royal Acre, Ladykiller, Capitulation, Sovena, Barryanda and Discourse. At the half-mile Capitulation moved up into second place, and at the entrance to the home stretch was with Some Lad, and in behind the pair came Barryanda, Royal Acre, Discourse, Ladykiller and Sovena. A great race developed up the straight, Discourse getting through on the rails to win by a neck from Royal Acre, with Ladykiller a head away, and heads only separating third, and the next two, Capitulation and Barryanda. The winner gave a doublefigure return. MANDANE RUNS FINE RACE The Wanganui Cup provided a fine race. All started, Eden Hall £651 and Yoma £6OO carrying most money, while Mint Leaf £464 and Joy Bird £387 were best backed of the remainder. An excellent dispatch saw Joy Bird go out to set the pace correctly, and there was no loitering on the journey, the English-bred mare leading out early from Yoma, Mint Leaf, Eden

Hall, Atareria, Henna and Mandane. Passing the stands the first time JoyBird was four lengths in front of David Garrick and Eden Hall, who were together, with Mint Leaf, Atareria, Henna, Mandane, Yoma and Novar running in that order. When they had reached the back stretch, the field commenced to bunch, Atareria lying just behind Joy Bird, with Mandane and Eden Hall right up, and Mint Leaf, David Garrick, Yoma and Henna following. Not a great deal was separating the field crossing the top, where Atareria began to weaken, and Mandane ran up to Joy Bird, the pair showing the way into the straight

from Eden Hall, Yoma, Atareria and Novar. Inside a furlong from home Mandane forged into the lead, but then Eden Hall, on the rails, challenged, the former holding on to win by a head, with Joy Bird half a length further back third, three-parts of a length in front of Yoma, who had come again when apparently beaten. There was a gap of seven lengths back to Novar, Atareria and Henna, who were in line, with David Garrick next and Mint Leaf last. The sectional times were: First quarter, 26 2-5; half-mile, 52; six furlongs, 1.18 3-5; mile, 1.44 4-6; mile and a-quarter, 2.10 2-5; mile and ahalf, 2.35; and the full distance, 3.0 4-5, showing that the contest was a truly run race. ONE FOR THE FAVOURITE There were no defections from the Juvenile Handicap, and the 11 runners provided plenty of thrills before the race started. First Footpad bolted, while Tea Miss, on the outside, was indulging in circus tricks. Freehold £723, Tea Miss £637, and More Gas’ £365 carried most money, everything outside of the first two favourites being at good odds. Footpad led over the first furlong from Freehold, Banket, Mooregas, Lady Quex, Callapat, Flying Hero, Gold Bag and Tea Miss, the last four being strung out. Commencing to come across the top Banket and Freehold were together, and they entered the home stretch well clear of Callapat, Footpad, Flying Hero, Mooregas, Egeria, Gold Bag and Tea Miss. Ater being straightened up, Freehold bested Banket after a short tussle, and won by three-parts of a length, with Flying Hero a similar distance back third. Callapat was a good fourth, and then came Mooregas, Lady Quex, Gold Bag, Tea Miss and Egeria, who was badly left. POLYDECTES WINS NICELY Of the 11 starters in the Petre Hack Handicap most money -was forthcoming for Polydectes £622, The Raider £509, Helotis £509 and Paul Lucerne £ 362, and backers of the favourite got a good return for their judgment. At the start Eka was badly left, White Ringlet and The Raider going out fast from King Midas, Polydectes, Dimmer, Helotis and Le Champ, and at the halfmile Dimmer moved up into third place to the leading pair, while Polydectes, Le Champ, King Midas and Helotis were all handy. It was in this order that they turned for home, and then the favourite came through quickly, going on to win by a length and a-half from the little fancied Dimmer, who was three-parts of a

length ahead of White Ringlet, with The Raider fourth. Next were Paul Lucerne, Le Champ, King Midas, Helotis, Kawhakina and LTTnosa. The last-named would be better suited by a longer journey. PAGANELLI—HOT FAVOURITE The final event, the Flying Handicap, attracted eight starters, and in a good pool the best supported were Paganelli £934. who was at a short price, Kiosk £650, Limited £594 and Shirley £564. A great start s*w High Finance first become conspicuous from Paganelli, Shirley, Covent Garden, Limited, Oration, Kiosk and Tip Tree, and at the half-mile High Finance was just clear of Paganelli, who was a couple of lengths in advance of Covent Garden, Shirley, Limited and Kiosk. Into the straight High Finance and Paganelli were together, when the latter compounded quickly, those handy also being Kiosk, Limited, Oration and Covent Garden. Once in line Paganelli held his own, scoring by a length and a-half from Shirley, who was half a length ahead of Limited and ■ Oration, who were both close up, with High Finance and Covent Garden following.
