ONEHUNGA FAIR

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING All roads in Onehunga last evening led to Jellicoe Park, -where one of tire largest crowds ever seen in the borough assembled for the opening of the Citizens' Fair, which has been Organised for the purpose of raising funds to liquidate the debt on the citizens’ band and the erection of a war memorial archway at the entrance to the park. The fair was formally opened by the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, who was followed by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. The- grounds were prettily illumm ated by hundreds of vari-coloured globes, while numerous gaily-decorated stalls dotted here and there among the trees gave the whole scene a fairyland effect. The genial summer evening lent itself to the carnival spirit which animated the whole proceedings as the various stalls and side-shows drove a joyously brisk trade with old and young. The dainty dancing by the pupils of Miss A. Beresford attracted large audiences, and the selections by the Ponsonby Band were highly appreciated. The programme terminated with a spectacular display of fireworks under the supervision of the Colonial Ammunition Company. The fair is to be continued to-day and to-morrow afternoons and evenings and gives promise of achieving the objects aimed at.
