WALSH ISLAND STRIKE
CONTRACTS HELD UP MEN ARE DETERMINED By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY. Thursday. The Acting-Premier, Mr. E. A. Buttenshaw, Aays that as a result of the trouble at Walsh Island, £1.500,000 worth df contracts is held up. Should the works be closed down, over 2,000 men will be rendered idle. Referring to the question of closing down the dockyards, he said a majority of the members of the Cabinet were absolutely opposed to State industrial undertakings, especially thQse which were not paying. They were trying to keep Walsh Island going because it represented a new industry, and was of considerable importance to the port of Newcastle. The men declare their determination not to return to work until the bonus system has been removed, because it is against the rules of their union.— A. and N Z.
