Women the World Over

FROM INDIA Sushama Tagore, who is the niece of the famous Rabindranath Tagore, is at present abroad studying educational methods. She had devoted her life

to the education of women and girls in India, and is -widely known and loved in her native country. A BEST SELLER Fame has come in a night to an English writer, Aliss Helen Waddell, who has written a book of extraordinary insight which has rapidly become a best seller. “The Wandering Scholars” is described as a work of “charm, humour and rare scholarship.” It deals with the learning fof that dark period of Europe’s history, the fifth to the 13th centuries, and out of the lumber of the past Aliss Waddell has unearthed many treasures of story and verse. Critics are already anticipating her next effort. \ A PORTRAIT PAINTER Recently the Aletropolitan Museum of Xew York chose a woman, Aliss Dorothy Vacaji, to paint the portrait of Thomas Edison, which is to occupy a prominent place in its gallery. Aliss Vacaji is a Londoner by birth and her work is well known on both sides of the Atlantic. She was selected from a large field of artists to paint the Edison portrait. PRETTIER UNIFORMS A step to break away from the monotony of unbecoming uniforms has been taken by the women guardians of one of the largest controlling boards in England. They decree that the women and girls in their establishment must have “prettier uniforms, with a nice overall of a bright colour,” for they declare that the members of their sex should aim at hygiene, cheerfulness and be not unbecomingly dressed. Perhaps the sombre black of the shop-girl will soon give place to the gay colours that she exhibits daily at the counter for the inspection of other women. Who can say? AVIATION The first woman to invent a device in connection with' aviation is Aliss Enid Lardnar, of Washington, 8.C., who recently patented a contrivance to aid in the finding of a plane’s exact position during long-distance flights. Hitherto, aviators have had difficulty in ascertaining their position because the variable height of a plane has made it impossible to use the ordinary methods employed in navigation at sea. Aliss Lardner’s invention consists of an aneroid attachment, by which an adjustment is made automatically according to the distance of the plane from the ground. ARCHITECTURE When competitors submitted designs for the new Shakespeare Alemorial Theatre, at Stratford-on-Avon, the judges selected that of Aliss Elizabeth Scott, a Bournemouth native. Aliss Scott, who is 29 years of age, is a partner in a firm of architects and has had only three years’ experience in designing. She will supervise the erection of the theatre, which will replace the building destroyed by fire in 1926. IN JAPAN Slowly, but surely, women are coming into their own in the East. It was recently stated that Aliss Alino Yamagarai is the first woman to be appointed principal of a primary school in Japan.
