“FOUR SONS”
THE GERMAN VIEWPOINT The Fox production, made by John Ford under the working title of “Grandma Bernle Learns Her Letters." has been changed to “Four Sons.” The film deals with the recent war from the German angle, and tells of a mother whose four sons are in the firing lines. Three who fight for the Fatherland, are killed, and the fourth, who has become an American citizen and takes his place in that army, lives to bring joy and light into his mother's shattered life. Margaret Mann, in the role of Grandmother Bernle. makes a deep impression for her powerful dramatic characterisation of a wonderful old woman. Miss Mann has been a character and “bit” actress for many years and is now nciarly 60 years of age. This is her first opportunity for playing a big role, and she acquits herself so wonderfully, that critics have predicted she is a worthy successor to Mary Carr, whose “mother" roles are famous throughout the world. Others in the cast of “Four Sons" include June Collyer, Earle Foxe, Francis X. Bushman, Jnr., and other notable names.
