BUTTER COMPETITION DECREASED PRODUCTION By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. OTTAWA, Tuesday, Mr. J. W. Edwards (Conservative) stated in the House of Commons to-day that the Australian treaty had brought about a decrease in the production of Canadian butter. The money spent on the 10,000,0001 b of butter Imported from Australia and New Zealand in one year would develop 5,000 mixed farms in Canada. Since the treaty came into force an effective exportable surplus of 24,000,0001 b of butter had been replaced by an annual importation of 10,000,0001 b. The farmers were also beginning to feel the effect of the treaty on the price of cheese. Australia and New Zealand had a climatic advantage. Mr. H. B. Adshead (Labour) said he had Informed his rural constituents that if they could not compete with their Empire neighbours 10,000 miles away they had better go out of business. Canadian farmers were exporting more than the country was importing because they could get more money outside the Dominion.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. BUTTER AND CHEESE Joseph Nathan and Co. report receipt of the following cable from their London principals:— “Butter.—l64s; cheese, 945; both markets quiet.” The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. is in receipt of the following cable dated London, February 15: “Dairy produce: New Zealand butter, choicest salted, 1645; market slow. New Zealand chesee, 93s to 945; market steady.” LONDON TALLOW MARKET Under date February 15 the London office of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., cabled as follows: "Tallow. —166 casks of tallow offered and 32 per cent. sold. Prices are unchanged.” FLOUR PRICE REDUCED By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. SYDNEY, Wednesday. The Millers’ Association reduced the price of flour by 10s to £l2 5s a ton to-day.—A. and N.Z.
