SNUB OR HUMOUR?
MR. BALDWIN’S REPLY TO LORD WOLMER POSTAL SYSTEM CRITICISED By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Tuesday. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, was asked in the House of Commons to-day whether he approved or repudiated a speech recently made by Viscount Wolmer, Assistant-Post-master-General, in which he had characterised the postal system as pure socialism, and suggested that it would be more efficient and economical if it were run by private enterprise. Mr. Baldwin replied cryptically to the effect that when Lord Wolmer had attained years of discretion probably he would speak with that caution which characterised every one of the utterances of Ministers. (Laughter.) Members of the House comment that Lord Wolmer’s age is 40, and opinion is divided as to whether Mr. Baldwin’s reply was a snub or humour. Members were speculating as to the prospects of Lord Wolmer’s resignation when it was disclosed that he is to start immediately upon a long sea voyage on the advice of his doctor.—A. and N.Z.
