FARMERS’ UNION FOUNDER PRESENTATION TO MR. A. G. GLASS Thirty years ago Mr. A. G. G. Glass set out frpm a bush section in the Bay of Islands district i.o organise the farmers of New Zealand into one big union. Travelling on - horseback through both islands, lie held meetings wherever he, went, and members were enrolled for a nominal subscription of Is. The first meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Kaitaia in February, 1899, when over 40 members attended. To-day the union has branches in every important district in the country, and is a strong factor in guarding the interests of the man on the land. Early last year members throughout New Zealand realised that the time had come to make some tangible recognition of the debt the union owed to its founder, Mr. Glass, and steps were taken to make him a suitable presentation. The movement was greeted with immediate support, and last evening, at a meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive, Mr. Glass was the recipient of a gold watch and chain. A substantial cheque had previously been forwarded to him. The presentation was made by Mr. R. D. Duxfield; on behalf of the Dominion president, Mr. W. Poison, who was not able to be present.
