BEAUTIFYING PROPOSALS GREAT SOUTH ROAD SCHEME At the meeting of the Manukau County Council yesterday, presided over by the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, a communication was received from the Great South Road Beautifying Council advising that the sum of £B6 19s 9d had been raised for the purpose of beautifying the Great South Road and asking to be supplied with the names of all persons owning property with frontages to the road. The report of the committee meeting held early in the month to consider contracts stated that the following tenders had been accepted:—Smith Bridge at Brookby, to Wilcox and Co. for £1,273 14s; Mill Bridge, Afriston, to the same firm, for £1,481 14s; Wade’s Road culvert, to H. Blank, for £260 13s 3d. The county engineer reported that during January, 848 cubic yards of scoria had been taken from the Tamaki pit, royalties thereon amounting to £B3 3s 6d. Information was received from the county inspector that building operations for the month were valued at £7,401.
