NEW REGENT
LAST CHINESE APPEARANCES The last two days are announced of the Kwong Sing Wah Troupe, who have proved to be such a sensational attraction at the New Regent, and who are positively making their final appearances in Auckland to-morrow. Crowded houses throughout the week have testified by their enthusiastic applause to the wonderful work performed by these Chinese artists. Each member of the troupe is a master at his particular art, whether it be magic, acrobatics, contortion, or juggling. Astonishing tricks of legerdemain are only followed by still more remarkable erhibitions of juggling, while the climax is reached by the splendid strength and balancing demonstrated in some phenomenal and hair-raising acrobatic feats. One member performs a dare-devil dive through two frames of wicked-looking knives and one of flame,, whilst two small boys provide no small share in the startling performance of the wonderful troupe. Certainly nothing like it has ever been seen in Auckland before. “Tell It to Sweeney,” starring Chester Conklin and George Bancroft, will be shown for two more days. A strong supporting pictorial programme includes a screamingly funny screen comedy, “Dr. Quack,” starring Jimmie Adams a budget of world events; an interesting Australasian Gazette, including some shots of the Australiasian bowling carnival in Melbourne; and some intimate screen snapshots. Maurice Guttridge and the Regent Operatic Orchestra provide a very excellent musical programme. Inside secrets of the “punctuality, efficiency, and good memory” of many business men are fevealed in the Paramount picture, “Figures Don’t Lie,” starring -Esther Ralston, which will be shown on Friday. In this instance Esther Ralston, who takes the part of private secretary to “Howdy” Jones (Ford Sterling), furnishes the three qualities mentioned. She finds a string around her employer’s finger an invaluable aid to his “good momery.” The plot of the picture centres about the incidents that arise through Miss Ralston’s innocent efforts to conduct her employer’s business, and at the same time keep from being shot by his jealous wife, Blanche Payson.
