NEWMARKET’S ADVANCE

NEW HOTEL BEING ERECTED OLD LANDMARK TO GO Since the time when horse trams journeyed to Newmarket, in the days when that district was a far suburb of Auckland, the site now occupied by the Newmarket Hotel was the favourite wayside house for travellers. To this day the old stables wherein people from the districts of Penrose, Onehunga, Otahuhu and other country places would stable their horses and traps, are standing, being used , as storerooms for the present hotel. It is this old link with the pioneering days of Auckland that is shortly to be removed to make way for a new and

up-to-date hotel in keeping with the rapid advance being made by the borough of Newmarket.

The plans have been completed by Mr. Robert Bert. Young, architest, and they provide for a handsome two storeyed brick structure with a frontage to Broadway of 104 feet, by a depth of 130 feet.

The building will be finished in red pressed brick, and tinted plaster. On the Epsom wing two modern shops will be erected, adding a distinct note to the whole structure. The main entrance which leads into an attractive vestibule will be located in the centre of the building, and the bar entrance will be at the Newmarket end of the hotel. The whole will be designed in Georgian style. Provision will be made for 20 new bedrooms, all of which will be appointed in the most up-to-date style. The bathrooms will be finished in tiles, and will lack nothing that makes for comfort and cleanliness.

Special attention is being paid to tjie lay-out of the bars. These will be tiled, and will contain large troughs through which there will be a continuous flow of water. The fldors will be tiled in mosaic and rubber. The completed building should prove a boon to residents of the district, and will fill a long felt need. Tenders are at present being called.
