The incident occurred at 10.45 last night. Constable Ward, who was on duty, saw a blaze in the yards of shops adjoining the Arcade, and on investigating saw McErlain in the act of heaping straw and cases on the fire, which accused had lighted. A hose was handy, otherwise a whole block of old buildings might have gone. The ptilice said that accused was not 1 mentally strong.
