INTER-HOUSE SPORT

ANNUAL SWIMMING GALA BELCHER’S GREAT EFFORT With anything connected with interhouse gatherings, the utmost enthusiasm prevails and the greatest degree of sportsmanship is evinced. This was the case at the fifth annual swimming carnival held in the Tepid Baths last evening by the Retail Drapers’ and Mercers’ Swimming Association. There was a record attendance, and the overwhelming neat did not for a moment mar the evening's sport. Keen rivalry existed, and the baths echoed and re-echoed to the shouts and shrill cries of enthusiastic supporters. The drapers’ shield was won by John Courts with 21 points; Tonson, Garlick and, Rendells second with 16; Milne and Choyce third with 151; and George Courts fourth with 131. Some excellent racing was witnessed, the finishes being exceedingly close and well contested. Belcher

proved the swimmer of the night, annexing the 220yds, 33 i-3yds, 66 2-3yds, and 100yds events s n great style. The carnival was :very well conducted, and the large crowd spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The six competitors got away well, with Birch two yards in front at the second lap. Belcher moved up at the third lap, with the rest closing in. Birch still held on in second place, but was tiring. Belcher increased his lead to eight yards. Birch retired and Belcher went on to win easily by 28 yards. Tetley and McPhail fought out a great finish for second place, Tetley getting in by a touch.
