Daylight Saving. —The directors of the Rexdale Dairy Company have decided to ask the Prime M inister to prevent any further operation of the daylight saving law. Library for Avondale.-— Now that Avondale is included in Auckland city the residents of that suburb are endeavouring to secure a branch of the public library. Fire in Timber-Mil r .— The main buildings of Bishara and Company’s saw'-mill at Taumarunui was destroyed by lire yesterday afternoon. The planing-mill and timber stacks were saved. • Shortage of Surgeons.- —The Thames Hospital Board is suggesting that, owing to the shortage in New Zealand, applications for the position of housesurgeon should be called for from Australia. Commissioner Inspects Northern Stations. —An inspection of police stations in the North is being made by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. B. McDveney. This is the; first time: in 22 years that this has been done. Vincent Street Fire. —-At 10.38 p.m. yesterday the City Fire Brigade rereceived a call to an unoccupied house in Vincent Street. A partition wall was slightly damaged before the blaze was suppressed. The cause is unknown. Cruelty To Horses. —For allowing horses to be worked while suffering from sore shoulders, Charlie Ah Ling, of Panmure, was fined £2 on two counts, at Otahuhu yesterday, and for working the two horses. Ah Foo and All Wing were each fined £2. Time Wanted. —At the sitting of the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday', no fewer than five of the defendants asked the presiding magistrate to allow time for them in which to pay their fines, out of work being the excuse in nearly all the cases. Time was granted. Cost Prohibitive. —The Onehunga Borough Council has had under consideration for the past few months a scheme devised by Mr. John Dawson. C.E., for the drainage of the combined areas of Ellers lie and portions of Onehunga and One Tree Hill. The council has now decided that in view of the prohibitive cost of the scheme, no further action be taken. Maori Boy’s Death, —At the inquest on the death of Hori Kereti Tukati, of Matakana Island, aged 15, whose body was found with a gunshot wound in the head, the coroner returned a. verdict that deceased died from a self-inflicted wound, there being no evidence to show whether it was accidental or intentional. Onehunga Destructor. —The new destructor at Onehunga is now in working order, and the emptying of refuse at the tiphead on the recreation reserve is prohibited. All rubtesh, etc., will in future be carted to the destructor, the charges being the same as those adopted by the Auckland City Council. House Practically Gutted. —Shortly after 10.30 last evening a sevenroomed house in Rockfield Road, One Tree Hill, was practically gutted by fire. The One Tree Hill Fire Brigade extinguished the blaze. The house which has been unoccupied for some time was owned by Mrs. K. Chamberlain, Vincent Road, Mount Albert.

Many Grass Fires. —The fire brigades in Auckland had a busy time yesterday afternoon, suppressing grass and gorse fires. The largest blaze was at Oranga Road. Onehunga, where about four acres of dry grass was burned. The Onehunga and One Tree Hill brigades extinguished the fire. Branches of the city brigade dealt with six outbreaks and the Mount Albert Brigade with one,
