CANADA’S WORST MINING DISASTER By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Mon. The total death toll of the Hollinger gold mine fire Is 39, the largest ever reported in a mine disaster in Ontario. The tragedy is the first of its kind in North America, a fire in a quartz mine being unknown. It now transpires that 51 miners were trapped by the fire in the mine, which is situated at North Bay, near Timmins, Ontario. Only 12 of the men were rescued. HAIG PIT EXPLOSION
MINE SEALED AGAIN LONDON, Monday. All 13 victims of the explosion in the Haig Pit. Cumberland, were married. The survivors state that there were four blasts, the last of which halfstunned them. They had to cover two miles guided by a solitary lamp and were forced to grope and crawl most of the way. All the rescuers have now been withdrawn as the roof has fallen in. The mine has been sealed again.—A. and N.Z.
