OUT-OF-WORK INSURANCE

MT. EDEN APPROVES PRINCIPLE The principle of national insurance against unemployment brought forth considerable discussion at the meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council , last evening. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. hotter, expressed disapproval of the unemployed relief methods being used in Auckland, and said that sooner or later some scheme would have to be adopted. He suggested that each local body should possess a register of the unemployed, where it . would be possible to check the exact number unemployed in the city and the outside areas. At present men who were only temporarily out of work, and also men. from various parts of the country, were registering, and accurate figures could not be obtained. The only solution, in his opinion, was national insurance for the unemployed. Mr. R. McK. Morison deprecated the insurance seheme and said that the council should be careful about supporting it. After further discussion a motion that the Mayor represent the council at a meeting to discuss the scheme, and that the council approve of the principle of insurance, was carried.
