FIJI CUSTOMS RETURNS

FAVOURABLE TRADE BALANCE Compared with the previous year, Fiji customs returns for 1927 show a slight decrease, though the trade balance is still favourable. For 1927, the total trade was £3,320,671 as compared with £3,221,372 in 1926, but whereas 1926 showed a balance of £ 259,452 of exports over imports, the year 19 27 shows a credit balance of £774,071. The imports were: 1926, £1,480,945; 1927, £1,223,303. Exports were: 1926, £1,740,427; 1927, £1,997,374. The principal exports were: Sugar, 1926, 56,991 tons, value £808,195; 1927,, 72,753 tons, value £1,125,215. Copra: 1926, 27,868 tons, value £573,475; 1927, 26,560 tons, value £534,416. Bananas: 787 bunches and 281,805 cases, value £138,040; 1927, 1,574 bunches and 271,406 cases, value £157,819. Rubber: 233,9901 b., value £23,581; 1927, 219,4381 b., value £15,276. Trocas shell showed a decline, while molasses remained stationary at 11,181 tons. Other articles fell from £158,635 to £137,112.
