ROWING

WAITEMATA CLUB FOURS WIN FOR JOHNSON’S CREW Trial fours for the Reynolds Memorial Cup were decided on Saturday bv the Waitemata Rowing Club, when there was an excellent field of eight crews. The course taken was from Orakei to a point some 200 yards down the railway embankment past Point Resolution. Before reaching the shelter of the point the oarsmen, particularly those in the outisde boat, had choppy water to negotiate, but conditions 'were excellent in the last 200 yd. stretch. Johnson’s crew, in winning the final, rowed a splendid race and narrowly scraped home from W. Stevenson. The following crews competed: W. Stevenson (str.), H. Cullen (3), C. Cairns (2), P. Bolland (bow); J. Stevenson (str.), J. H. Beesley (3), J. T. McCorkindale (2), H. W. Dunne (bow); A. M. Mackay (str.), G. Barker (3), E. Hope-Bishop (2), F. Simmons (bow); V. Smith (str.), C. P. Belton (3), R. Smith (2); E. B. Gladding (bow); D. Smith (str.), C. Read (3), T. Keegan (2) C. Hunt (bow); J. Johnson (str.), W. D. Shore (3), P. Platt (2), K. Kenrick (bow); C. Fearon (str.), T. Impey (3) J. H. Lawrence (2), N. Wheatcroft (bow); L. Brooker (str.), J. Russell (3), J. K. Hunn (2), W. E. Jones (bow). Following are the results: First Heat.—W. Stevenson beat A. Stevenson by a length. On rounding the point A. Stevenson was considerably in the lead, but went too far out of his course and the other crew, sprinting up the straight, crossed the line with a clear length to spare. Second Heat.—aMckay beat V. Smith by half a canvas, D. Smith beng two lengths back. This was a great race, the two leading crews being neck and neck most of the way, until Mackay took charge. V. Smith made a great effort to come up, but failed by half a canvas in a stirring finish. Third Heat. —Johnson beat Fearon by two lengths. Brooker was a good length back from the second crew. The finish was not as exciting as in the preceding he Final. —Johnson, 1; W. -Stevenson, 2; Mackay, 3. Won by a canvas, a length between second and third.

AUCKLAND CLUB TRIALS CREWS FOR “AT HOME” The Auckland Rowing Club's Subscription Fours, which attracted an entry of five crews, were rowed on the St. George's course on Saturday. Once again a broken oar robbed a leading crew of what would almost certainly have been victory in the final. Crews competing were as follow: R. Stacey (str.), T. Morgan (3), E. Factor (2) H. Zukerman (bow); G. Cleal (str.), J. McCormish (3), E. Zukerman (2), A.Hertzell (bow); Eaddy (str.), Thorburn (3) H. Goldwater (2), R. Seabourn (bow); Field (str.). Andrews (3). A. Cutts (2), T. Brand (bow); Jonson (str.), Sincock (3), Stacey (2), Rose (bow). First Heat. —Cleal beat Stacey by a length. Stacey made a great effort to catch the winner, but was unable to do so. Second Heat.—Eaddy beat Field by a short length. Field got away with an excellent start, taking a lead of a short length. This crew lost its lead, however, when stroke and two had their oars jammed in the water. Eaddy held his advantage for the remainder of the race. Final.—Eaddy, 1; Stacey, 2; Cleal, 3. Crossing the gap past Luna Park Cleal went to the front and had taken a clear length’s lead, when the two oar broke at the button, Eaddy going ahead to win by two lengths from Jonson. The following will row an eightoared race for the president’s and expresident’s trophy at the club’s “At Home” next Saturday:— Stacey (str.), Andrews (7), Hill (6), Mahon (5), Zukerman (4). Thorburn (3), Coutts (2), Hurtzell (bow). McComish (str.), Field (7), Morgan (6), Bygate (5), Barrett (4), Duck (3), Cbappell (2), Goldwater (bow). Ross (str.), Martin (7), Cleal (6), Eaddy (5), Jonson (4), Leabourn (3), Doull (2), Biand (bow). NORTH SHORE CLUB EYRE TRIAL FOURS The Eyre trophy was competed for by four North Shore crews on Saturday, the final being won by Dean’s crew after a hard fight. First Heat.—Norris appeared an easy winner until his seat broke, and Gardiner’s crew paddled to the line. Second Heat.—Dean, who was a length behind most of the race, made a great effort to finish and beat McCallum by a good length. Final.—Dean, 1; Gardiner, 2. A great race, with both crews spurting hard at the final, Gardiner falling short by half a length. ST. GEORGE’S CLUB DOUBLE-SCULL EVENT Owing to the ebb of the tide the final of the Tewsley double sculls, to be rowed by St. George’s Club on Saturday, had to be postponed.
