FATAL INSPECTION OF CLOSED MINE EXPLOSION IN CUMBERLAND By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Reed. 10.30 a.m. LONDON. Sunday. Thirteen members off an inspection party were killed by an explosion at the Haig pit, Cumberland, which has been closed since the fatal accident to four men in December. The party, including two Government and other mine officials, descended to-day to investigate the possibility of reopening it. It is believed that the explosion followed the opening of a sealed working.—Sun. FORTY MEN TRAPPED RESCUES FROM GAS-FILLED GOLDMINE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. VANCOUVER, Sun. The fate' of the men who were trapped by fire in the Hollinger Gold Mine, at North Bay, is still unknown. Twelve were rescued to-day, and on Saturday six were Renown to be dead. QRIGINALLY 47 men were caught in the mine. The smoke hindered the work of rescue, but seven of the men were brought to the surface alive out of the gas-filled levels. Two relief trains carrying gasmasks broke all speed records from Toronto to Timmins (the nearest station) over the distance of 452 miles. The fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in an abandoned working. OIL PLANT EXPLOSION TEN PEOPLE KILLED NEW YORK, Saturday. At least ten persons were killed at Everett, Massachusetts, by an explosion at the refining plant of the Beacon Oil Company.—A. and N.Z.
