PILLAGE OF CARGO.—A steady increase has taken place during the past three' years in the value of cargo pillaged fr? 11 ) South Australian ports, says the ‘ Daily Commercial News.” Figures compiled by the Warehousemen’s Association show that during the year ended November 00, 1927, the losses amounted to £1,349. During the corresponding periods for 1926 and 1925, the figures are respectively, £993 and £BOI.

CLIMATE AND BUTTER EXPORT.— Commenting on some of the remarks bv Dr. Haden Guest in Canberra, the secretary for Markets and Migration Department, said that it was impossible to supply a continuity of Australian butter exports to Britain, due to climatic conditions here. The amount of butter for export consequently fluctuated from year to year. For 1925-26 total butter exports were 43,705 tons, valued at £7,006,830; for 1926-27, 34,251 tons, valued at £5,447,244. As regards fruit exports, he said Dr. Haden Guest’s suggestion to ! export fruit in bulk from Australia and can it in England was quite unworkable. Australian canned fruit had to face severe American competition in England, as the latter country dumped its fruit there at very low prices—below the cost of fruit production in Australia.
