KUMEU SHOW
HIGH QUALITY ENTRIES STRONG FRIESIAN SECTION That many breeders in the Kumeu district have pedigree breeding down to a fine art was fully indicated at the eighth annual fixture of the Kumeu District Agricultural and Horticultural Society held on Saturday. Considering the size of the district, most sections were well patronised, many high quality stock coming forward. In common with most other Auckland provincial shows, dairy cattle provided the strongest section, the Jersey classes attracting 61 entries, the Friesians 44, and Shorthorns 19. All things considered* ifhe Jersey section was a most creditable one and, according to the judge, Mr. A. C. Jones, the best seen to date at a Kumeu fixture. Though there was little outstanding in the entries, and one or two, in fact, would not have brought much credit even to an ordinary milking herd, some very creditable types of animals were seen. Although certainly not perfect, the winner of the oneyear heifer class, C. G. Aitken’s Tauwhare Eclipse, was a very pretty little Jersey, and the champion cow, G. H Pearson’s entry, was also typical of the breed. A well supported grade section rather detracted from the general standard of the Jersey entries for breed « the Friensians provided the most even section, and generally made up a very creditable class, it was apparent here also that exhibif lve ? considerable attention to the get up of the animals, and the class, generally, was not showing the effects of the feed shortage to the extent noticeable on many of the other cattle, particularly the grade Jerseys The Shorthorns for the most part were not a bad lot, though breed for breed they did not come up to the standard of the exhibits in either the Jersey or Friesian sections. Only three exhibitors came forward, Hansen Bros, carrying off two firsts and one second, G. W. Farley four firsts and four seconds, and W. Gush one first. The sheep sections were well filled, the Romney and Southdown sections especially attracting some very creditable animals. In the English Leicester classes, with the exception of one second awarded to Sinton Bros., C. M. Boord carried off all the prize tickets. In the So.uthdowns G. R. and H. Hutchinson, with five firsts and two seconds, were the strongest exhibitors, with H. McCarroll also a strong exhibitor, gaining two firsts and four seconds. Hobson Farm was awarded one second. F. W. Strange took seven firsts andone second with Romneys, H. P. McLeod three seconds, H. McCarroll two seconds, and the Auckland City Council one second.
