MANY THRILLS AT ADDINGTON

ST. MAURA’S BIG RACE QUEEN’S OWN TAKES THE SPRINT ( Special tol THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A very large attendance was recorded at Addington to-day on the occasion of the Metropolitan Trotting Club s summer meeting. The track was in splendid order. The totalisator handled £31,049i, compared with £25,502§ last year. Notes on the racing and details of later results are appended. WHEN NOURMAHAL GOT UP Owing to a mishap Petroleuse could not fulfil her engagement in the Spreydon Handicap. This left eleven unhoppled trotters to go to the post. For a mile and a-half it was an interesting contest, but after that the backmarker, Duke Bingen, came away to win very easily. His victory was made easy by Nourmahal leaving her feet while contesting the issue with him in the straight. For a mile and a-quarter Nelson Boy trotted a promising race, but after that he faded badly. FAVOURITES FAIL TO LEAVE Daisy Pointer was the only withdrawal from the Linwod Handicap, which left sixteen sprinters to fight out the issue. Firpo and Kulnine were best backed, and neither left the mark. Pat Dillon was quick to reach the front and led past the two furlongs’ disc in 34 2-ss. At that stage she was being closely followed by Sahib, Jean McElwyn, Albert Logan and Locanda General. At the end of half a mile, negotiated in 1.7 1-5, Pat Dillon, Sahib and Jean McElwyn were pacing in close

order, with Albert Logan still in the picture and Locanda General dropping back. Nearing the bend for home Jean McElwyn dashed into the lead and went on to register an impressive win by three lengths from Pat Dillon and Sahib, who were being hard ridden a furlong from the judge. Jean McElwyn is a compact little pacer, rich in blood and endowed with all the true essentials of a real race mare. She carries the colours of Mr. F. McMillan, of Auckland. HOW ST. MAURA WON Pluto and Author Jinks both had really good chance of collecting a big portion of the prize attached to the Midsummer Handicap, but these were spoiled by them having to cover an awful lot of ground. As it was Author Jinks fought his way to the front three furlongs from home, but the effort told on him in the straight. Pluto, despite his adversities, was in fourth place at the end. Over the first mile and a-half Harry Audubon, then Fight Ever, made the pace, the first mile being done in 2.20 2-5 and the mile and a-half in 3.26 1-5. Two furlongs from home St. Maura, Shine Soon, Billy Sea and Machine Gun put in their claims. .St. Maura was first into the straight, with Shine Soon, Machine Gun and Billy Sea after her. At the distance-pos- Shine Soon broke and nearly came down. Machine Gun soon accounted for Billy Sea, but the latter came again, the issue ending in St. Maura winuing by two lengths from Machine Gun, who beat Billy Sea by a good length. Pluto was fourth. St. Maura is an aged mare by St. Swithin from Maura, and is owned by Mr. J. H. Delargey. She is trained by F. J. Holmes, who drove her a heady race. ANOTHER FAVOURITE BEATEN

Colene Pointer carried most money in the Papanui Handicap, but after being happily placed for a mile she drifted into the fuck. Quality and Avenger declined to begin leaving Lady Embrace to make the early running from High Jinks, Zenith, Jacky Audubon and Nantwich, and so they raced till a mile and a-half had been completed, the first mile of which was left behind in 2.23. Going to the far turn Jacky Audubon went into the lead, with Zenith, Lady Embrace, Dalmeny and Rey Logan putting in good work. Entering the stretch Jacky Audubon had a four-lengths lead of Zenith, but when looking a winner Jacky Audubon broke and left Zenith to register a comfortable win from Jacky Audubon, with Ray Logan two lengths farther away third. Dalmeny was under a stiff driv at the bend for home, but could not come on. High Jinks was going well when his sulky wheel was damaged and he had to be pulled up. Zenith is a brother to Pan Yan. QUINTETTE FIGHT IT OUT The Cashmere Handicap provided a snappy finish, no fewer than live trot-

ters demanding first money over the concluding three furlongs. Had R.ed Oak not broken twice he would ha\e won- Wild Hebe Jed for nine furlongs, where Duke Bingen and Red Oak elected to make the pace, with O v ir Lady, Wild Hebe and Frisco Beau following them closely, and so they raced till within two furlongs of home, where Our Lady, Duke Bingen and Red Oak were racing in line, with Wild Hebe and Frisco Beau just in behind them. WTien the straight was reached Red Oak broke and Our Lady drew out, but then she commenced to weaken. Frisco Beau and Duke Bingen then tackled her, Frisco Beau beating Our Lady by a neck, the latter getting home half a length clear of Duke Bingen. Red Oak was fourth. Audobell broke before going two furlongs, and Auduman put himself out of court early. . THE JUVENILES Ten three-year-olds lined up for the Juvenile Handicap, which was won by Mr. B. Grice’s Kingcraft. The gelding took the lead with a round to sro. and never looked like getting beaten, wining with a good deal in hand from Don Derby, who gave a nice even display. Shirley McKinney was in the picture all the way, but third money was the most she could get. Rey Child was in the lead for half a mile. She held second place till six furlongs were completed, but after that he was beaten. Great Triumph, Dilmon, Harvest Child and Author Franz were among the discards before two fur- ; longs were disposed of. SARELLA SCORES NICELY Twenty-two pacers assembled for the Liverpool Handicap, for which Sarella was sent out favourite. Over the first part of the contest she was compelled to cover a lot of ground, but rounding the far turn the last time she got a lucky run on the rails that enabled her to reach the front, which she never relinquished, to win nicely by half a length from Diamond Child, who gave a creditable display over the twomile journey. At three furlongs Searchlight had taken the lead, and showed the way down the back to Binscarth, !Pat Dillon, Kreisler, Sarella, Denvers Doll, Evelyn Locanda, Orphan and Meb. Entering on the last circuit Searchi light had commenced to tire, and Bins--1 earth and Kreisler led out of the ; straight from Orphan t Sarella, Evelyn ! I.ocanda and Diamond Child. Rounding the far turn Binscarth and Orphan were i just in front of Sarella, with Evelyn j and Diamond Child still in ! the picture. Sarella then shot through on the rails and went on to secure first money from Diamond Child and BinsJ earth. Orphan tired in the straight. LAST TO QUEEN’S OWN j Trimmer got away well in the Craven Handicap and had a useful lead ! with a mile to go, but before half the journey was covered Black Admiral Taurekareka and Queen’s Own were within striking distance of him. Going along the back Black Admiral was in charge with Trimmer, Taurekareka, Queen’s Own, Logan Chief, Acron, Logan Holm, Terence Dillon and Author Jinks all fighting for the honours. Black Admiral was first in line for home, but over the last hundred yards Queen’s Own finished fast and beat Black Admiral by a length. Taurekareka was third and Acron fburth.
