LURE OF THE BIG FISH
PIONEER OF THE SPORT RETURNS MR. E. P. ANDREAS OF SYDNEY Pioneer of the sport of swordtfishing, Mr. E. P. Andreas, of Sydney, has arrived back for another grapple with the niako and the big game of northern waters. 'THOUGH he kept it quiet on the . Aorangi and appeared as a novice when the fishing folk got together, Mr. Andreas, with Mr. A. C. Campbell, were the discoverers of the potentiality of the waters since made famous by people like Zane Grey. In 1912 or 1913, these two fishermen who then were out after kingfish got tired of having their lines snatched and tackle broken by much bigger and gamer fish. The trouble was to find the right gear and thus originated the “trace” which solved the difficulty and. landed the first swordfish ever caught on rod up north. Fishing is not by any means the only sport in which Mr. Andreas is interested, Several horses, including Quandong, race under his colours in Sydney and he is the commodore of the Royal Prince Albert Yacht Club. After the Bay of Islands sport he will go to Taupo for trout. His party, which leaves for Russell to-night, includes Sir “Tom” Bridges and Mr. Percy Arnott, wellknown business man and keen yachtsman of Sydney. “New Zealand is the best sporting country in the world,” says Mr. Andreas. “If it were on the Mediterranean you could charge 150 guineas to every visitor who came in and be overrun with them.”
