HIGH PRICES FOR WHEAT

SCIENTIFIC BREEDING In Canada the wheat crop is so valuable that scientific wheat breeding receives much more attention than it does in this country. A message from Toronto reads as follows: A bushel of Reward wheat, which won the grand championship at the Royal Winter Fair here, was auctioned off for 125 dollars. Opening at sdol, the bids were first jumped by lOdols, and then 25d015, indicating the interest which has been aroused by this variety winning the spring wheat championship. The successful bidder was J. B. Almey, representing the Manitoba Government. The prize-winning wheat was exhibited under the name of William Pierce, who runs a demonstration farm for the Manitoba Government at Birtle, Manitoba. A considerable furore Has been raised over the showing of this wheat, a variety developed by the Dominion experimental Farms, the seed of which was loaned out to the'various provincial Governments for testing under the varying climatic conditions. It was not intended that Reward wheat should be exhibited this year, as it was still considered to be in the experimental stage. It is a promising variety and a fine exhibition wheat, on which account it was realised that possibly too great importance might be attached to it if exhibited before passing its final tests.

Dairy Cows for Japan. —A very valuable shipment of Holstein Friesians left Seattle recently for Yokohama, Japan. They include the great cow Bella Veeman Segis Matador, 32,2171 b milk and 997.61 b fat as a senior four-year-old, and also 643.21 b milk and 36.361 b fat in seven days as a six-year-old. Also Sir Inka May Bth, a son of Sir Inka May from Carnation Matador Idealeaze (holder of world’s senior two-year-old record of 28,9871 b milk and 911.61 b fat) and Sir Inka May 9th, dam of Hazelwood Bracelet Mercedes (30,4001 b milk and 9921 b fat).

There can scarcely be too much room in a farrowing pen. Plenty of floor and air space is essential. The floor must be good and well drained. The ventilation should be efficient, without being draughty.
