TREACLE SPONGE
Required: Jib. flour, 1 level teaspoonful carbonate of soda, Jib. suet, 1 egg, J of a teacup golden svrup. Milk to bind. Mix the flour with a pinch salt and the carbonate of soda. Slightly warm the golden syrup. Mix in the finely chopped suet, then the treacle. Add the beaten egg and sufficient milk to bind into a mixture that will just drop heavily from the spoon. Turn into a greased basin so as to three parts fill it. Cover with greased paper and steam for two hours.
