POPULAR FIXTURE OPENS DRESS CIRCLE WINS HIGHWEIGHT (Special to THE SUN.) ROTORUA, To-day. The Rotorua Racing Club’s meeting opened to-day in fine weather. ‘There is a large attendance and the track is in good order. Time, 1.45. Won Very Easily Dress Circle began smartly and led out from Bold Front and Day Abbey with the remainder of the field well up. Running along the back Day Abbey moved up and went into the lead closely followed by Master Lu, Dress Circle and Lady Spalpeen. When about a furlong from the straight. Dress Circle assumed command and led into the straight and was closely pur-; sued by Day Abbey, Master Lu, Lady Spalpeen and Wiltshire. The leader held his advantage and went on to win easily by a length and a half from Wiltshire, who stayed on to beat Lady Spalpeen by a length. Pekatahi was fourth and then came Lady Cintra and Bold Front. HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP Of £100; 6 furlongs 1— LA ROMA, 9.0, E. A. Keesing .. 1 4 YOUNG PRETENDER, 8.1, McMahon 2 9 BRIGHT COMET, 8.5, Driscoll .. 3 Also started:— 6 Glenetta, 8.2 4 3 Cybelle, 7.12 5 7 Miss Myrtle, 7.12 ... 6 10— Te Waka, 8.5 7 2 Palmares, 8.9 .. 0 5 Day Guide, 8.8 0 8— Captain Cobham, 8.8 0 11— Oscar, 8.1 0 12— Leitrim, 8.1 0 Won by two lengths; third horse one and a half lengths away. Favourite Scores Again Captain Cobham was left. Young Pretender and Day Guide jumped out and piloted the field for a furlong, then La Roma took command and was attended by Leitrim and Young Pretender, who were on terms, with Bright Comet, Day Guide and Palmares following in that order. La Roma was well clear nearing the straight, followed by Young Pretender, with Leitrim, and Cybele next. Once straightened up, La Roma was not troubled to go on and win by two lengths from Young Pretender, who easily beat Bright Comet by a length and a half. Glenetta was fourth and immediately after passing the post the saddle slipped and the boy was thrown off. Cybele came next followed by Miss Myrtle and Te Waka. MOKOIA HANDICAP Of £125; 7 furlongs and about 80 yards. a—ARCHEEN, 7.5, H. Wiggins .. 1 3 QUINCOMA, 8.0, E. Keesing .. ... 2 4 NEW MOON, 7.6,, S. Bryce .. ~ 3 Also started;-- . 5 Prince Lu, 7.0 4 I—Macroom, 7.11 .. .. » 7—The Author, 7.9 * 6 6 Queen Arch, 7x5 .. .. .. .. .. .. 7 Won by a length, of a length separating second and third. Time, 1.31 3-5. Archeen At Last Quincoma began best and led but from New Moon and Prince Lu. When two furlongs had been covered Prince Lu moved into the lead, being attended by Quincoma. New Moon and Queen Arch, who fell at this stage. Prince Lu was still in, the van crossing the top, and was closely followed by Archeen, Quincoma and New Moon. There was no alteration into. the straight, and at the distanoe Archeen drew out to go on and w'in by a length from Quincoma. New Moon was three-quarters of a length away third, and then came Prince Lu, Macroom and The Author. ROTORUA CUP Of £300; 1J miles. 5 CORINAX, 7.21, S. Cammick .. .. 1 4 GALA DAY, 8.5, E. Keesing ..' 2 7 SIAOSI, 7.12, A. Stead 3 Also started:— 1— Le Choucas, 9.0 .. 4 3—Scat, 7.10 5 8— Lord Star, 7.13 .. 6 2 Alonsoa, 7.13 .. .. .. •. .. .. 7 6 Uralla, 7.7 8 Won by a neck, three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, -2.8 3-5. Surprise in Cup From a good start Corinax led out from Scat and Gala Day. Passing the stand Gala Day and Corinax were together and close up behind came Uralla, Scat, Le Choucas and Siaosi. The leaders were still on terms along the back, followed by Siaosi and Le Choucas, who had moved up. Nearing the straight Corinax and Gala Day moved clear of the field and led into the home stretch two lengths in front of Uralla, Le Choucas, Alonsoa and Siaosi. In a great finish Corinax held on best to beat Gala Day by a neck. Siaosi came • with a late run finish in third place, three-quarters of a length away, and then came Le* Choucas, Scat, Lord Star, Alonsoa and Uralla in that order. The winner returned a double-figure dividend.
