Matangi Team Wins Polo Championship
TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED (From Our Oven Correspondent) MATANGI. Friday. Chockful of thrills, the final matches of the Auckland provincial polo tournament were played at M» tangi to -day. Although the ground was not in the best of order, owing to the dry weather and week’s hard play on it, the teams were in excellent form, and fast and furious games, of a high order of merit were witnessed, to the delight of the several hundred spectators who were present. The great game of the day was the Auckland Cup final, when the Matangi team, consisting of A V. Chitty, R. H. Townsend, J. Shaw and C. Ranstead, defeated the Waihoa team of B. Alslable, A. McNicol, J. Wright and T. Hines by seven goals to one. Half-way through the match Matangi became aggressive and completely outclassed Its opponents and managed to keep the play in Waihou’s territory most of the time. Mr. J. McNicol refereed. At the conclusion of the tournament, the president of the Matangi Club, Mr. A. Miller, In thanking the Hawke’s Bay and Feildlng teams for making the trip to the Waikato, said that there was no doubt about the fact that it was their presence at the tournament which had made it such a success. The gate takings of £IOO would assist the Matangi Club materially In their efforts to buy the ground. Mr. Milter heartily congratulated the winners of the various events, and handed to Messrs R. G. Blennerhassett, W. Phillips and V. Chitty the trophies their teams had won. The results were as follow: Handicap Cup.—Cambridge, handicap 12 (R. G. Blannerhassett, W. Fisher, A. Fish and N. Garland), defeated Feildlng 16 (R. McKelvie, W. Levin, W. Short and Wm. Stewart), by 21 goals to 36. Mr. N. Spence refereed. Championship Junior Cup.—Te Mata (J. Chitty. W. Phillips, O. McQueen and J. Moore) defeated Matangi (B. W. Ranstead, R. Ranstead, W. Taylor and C. Clarkin) by four goals to one. Mr. C. Potts refereed. Auckland Provincial Cup.—Matangi (A. V. Chitty, R. H. Townsend, J. Shaw and G. Ranstead) defeated Waihou A (ID. Alslabie, A. McNicol, J. Wright and T. Hines) by seven goals to one.
