IN THE MARKET PLACE
CHEAP BANANAS POTATOES OVER SUPPLIED Ripe bananas are making low money in the City Marts at the moment. Heavy supplies of most seasonal New Zealand fruits are coming forward. . . . _ The market is glutted with inferior quality potatoes.
The Waipahi from the Fiji group brought a consignment of 10,000 cases of , bananas on to the Auckland market on Wednesday. The bulk of the consignment was over-ripe and has to be placed into immediate consumption. Ex the ship’s side the fruit was sold at from 9s to 17s a case. To-day at auction, under the hammer even lower rates ruled for extra ripe lots. . . . The Tofua brings forward a fresh shipment on Monday week. Values for tomatoes have registered a hardening tendency over the past few days. Peaches were slightly easier in price at yesterday’s sales. The demand for hot-house remains dull. Best quality apples continue to meet with only a slow sale while inferior grades are not wanted. Dessert plums meet with a good demand. , . Little movement is registered in the field and garden produce section, the dry weather still restricting supplies of green vegetables. Large quantities of inferior grades of Pukekohe potatoes are coming on the market and sending prices down. With the higher values ruling over the past week or so the demand for eggs has eased, but the market, with short supplies, has a firming tendency.
