DACRE’S FAREWELL
Cricket Enters Final Round BIG DAY AT EDEN PARK STIMULATED by the closest contest for championship honours for years past, the A.C.A senior cricket competition will enter on the final round to-morrow. The occasion will also be noteworthy as marking Ces Dacre’s last appearance in Auckland cricket prior to his departure for England.
The chief match at Eden Park will be the contest between North Shore and Eden, the Devonport men making their first appearance at headquarters this season. This match is regarded a s a special attraction, and a benefit t 0 Dacre. and in view of the appeal to public support it is up to the players to realise that what is wanted is bright and breezy play, and not the sort of stodgy cricket which has reduced club attendances at the park (despite the closeness of the competition) to a mere handful each Saturday. Dacre himself can be depended on to make things lively if—as everyone hopes—he manages to get off the mark with that burst of brilliance which has made him a devastating wrecker of bowling reputations. GO TO IT, EDEN! Eden has the thought of two recent defeats to spur it on, and the additional incentive to prove that its claim to be the premier club side of Auckland is not founded on a ‘“well-oiled and efficacious system of luck,” as some of the chirpy souls on the terraces would have them believe. Shore, on the other hand, is making its first appearance at Eden Park, and it has the memory of a startling collapse under similar circumstances last season to wipe out, as well as giving a fitting sendoff to its most famous player of the present day, if not in the whole history of the club. Ponsonby and Parnell have a little argument to settle on No. 2 area. Both teams have fairly leapt into prominence lately, and much will depend in the final rally for championship honours on which team can pull off the match. ON LEVEL TERMS The B section is being contested by United, Varsity, Grafton, and Y.M.C.A., the first two teams meeting on No. 3 area at Eden Park. United is another team which has proved a surprise packet in the competition, and Varsity will have to go all the way—and then some—to notch a win. Grafton and Y.M.C.A. are both without their usual leaders. A. C. Snedden and E. H. Bowlev. and while the standard of play will be reduced, they are meeting on sufficiently level terms to promise an interesting match.
