FORMER FLAGSHIP TO BE BROKEN UP
MELBOURNE’S LAST VOYAGE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.50 a.m- SYDNEY, Thursday. The cruiser Melbourne, one of the original vessels of the Australian Fleet, sailed to-day for England, where she goes to the hands of the shipbreakers. —A. and N.Z. H.M.A.S. Melbourne, formerly flagship of the Australian Navy, is a si.%ier ship to the Sydney, which fought the famous action with the Emden off the Cocos Islands on November 9, 1915. With the Sydney, the Melbourne was escorting the Australian and New Zealand Expeditionary forces to Egypt. Another ship of the same class is H.M.S. Chatham, formerly flagship of the New Zealand Division. The Melbourne has visited New Zealand twice since the war. It was on her way to Auckland in January, 1922, that she picked up the schooner Helen B. Sterling’s “5.0.5.” and steamed at full speed through a raging cyclone to her rescue. The cruiser’s last visit to the Dominion was in 1924.
The Sydney, on account of her historical associations, has been saved from the scrap-heap and will be preserved as a national relic in the same way as Nelson’s Victory has been preserved at Portsmouth.
