BRITISH LEGION’S OFFER
“JELLICOE NOT THE MAN” DAILY EXPRESS COMMENT By Cable. — Press Association .-— Copyright. LONDON, Thursday. Commenting on the British Legion’s offer to Earl Jellicoe to succeed the late Earl Haig as its president, the “Daily Express” says that it hopes Lord Jellicoe will show wisdom and decline the offer of the legion, which is almost wholly composed of ex-Army men. “Furthermore, the legion above all should stand apart from the sphere of controversy. Lord Jellicoe’s war record, rightly or wrongly, has been the subject of fiercer controversy than ever centred round a British admiral. “The legion particularly needs a man of personality whose appeals can move the great mass of his fellow countrymen. In spite of his services to the country Lord jellicoe is not a household figure. He does not touch the heart or the imagination of the people, nor is he of an age when fresh and burdensome duties can be successfully essayed. The one man adequately fitted to succeed Earl Haig is the Prince of Wales.”—A. and N.Z.
