SOUTHERN SESSIONS WELLINGTON CHARGES Press Association. WELLINGTON", Wednesday. The trial of Albert Goodman, horsetrainer, of Trentkam, on a charge of negligently driving a motor-car so as to cause bodily injuries to Percy John Aldridge and Norman Parata, began in the Supreme Court to-day. The Chief Justice, Sir Charles . Skerrett, was pn the Bench. Mr. P. S. K. Maccassey, Crown Prosecutor, conducted the case for the Crown, while accused was represented by Mr. H. F. O’Leary. The case, as outlined by Mr. Maccassey. was that on September 17, 1927, between Upper Hutt and Trentham, accused, who was driving a motor-car, collided with a motorcycle ridden by Aldridge, with Parata on the pillion. Both the latter had their right legs broken, Aldridge having to have his amputated. Parata was still in hospital. Mr. Maccassey described th.e motorcycle as proceeding on the correct side of the road at a reasonable speed, between 20 and 25 miles an hour, while it was alleged that Goodman was travelling at an excessive speed, and that he swerved to the right of the 18ft wide bitumen track to pass a motor-car in front and collided with the motor-cycle. Evidence as to the speed of, the car was called and this was estimated at varying speeds of from 35 miles to 60 miles an hour. Evidence was also given of accused’s sobriety-at the time of the collision. The case will be continued to-morrow.
