MR. BALDWIN’S GIFT

£120,000 TO EXCHEQUER * HOW MONEY GROWS British "Wireless —Press Assn.—Copyright RUGBY, Tuesday. In the House of Commons on December 9 the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, stated that the total amount of gifts made by individuals to the Exchequer during and since the war was over £1,078,000. A gift of £120,000 to purchase war loan bonds for cancellation was made by “F.S.T.” in 1919, this being 20 per cent, of the donor’s estate. It later became known that “F.S.T.” was Mr. Stanley Baldwin, the present Prime Minister, who was then Financial Secretary to the Treasury. The latest gift of £500,000, if invested at 4| per cent, at compound interest, would amount in 100 years to nearly £41,000,000.—A. and N.Z.
