POLICY IN CHINA
UNANIMITY OF COMMONS GOVERNMENT’S GRATITUDE By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 12.15 p.m. LONDON, Wed. The Foreign Secretary, Sir Austen Chamberlain, in the debate on the Address-in-Reply, gratefully recognised the unanimity of the House of Commons in respect to the declaration of policy in China. The Government, he said, would not object to a tarifl: autonomy in China, based on a uniform tariff which would not discriminate against British merchants, but it must object to illegal levies over and above 24 per cent of the surtaxes now in force. A total withdrawal of troops from China was not yet. possible, but there was beginning to be a better appreciation of real goodwill.—A. and N.Z.
