FROM GAOL UNDER ESCORT
A POSITION which is probably unique in Auckland arose after the collapse of the trial of Stanley Uren Thomas, erstwhile canvasser for Hotel Auckland shares, on charges of theft.
fJiHE trial had been almost completed when Mr. Bryce Hart, for the accused, intimated that Thomas would , . . plead guilty. Counsel then asked for bail, pointing out that the accused wished to get married. Mr. Justic Reed said he could not consider ball, and he was going to sentence the accused on Saturday. Mr. Hart asked what steps would
be taken to assist the ceremony being performed at the Registrar’s office, A suggestion from his Honour that it take place at the gaol was not met wjth fa^our “Well,” said his Honour, "I will ask the prison authorities to allow the prisoner to come to town under escort between now and Saturday when he can be married. If you need any authority' apply to me.”
