Auckland Horses At New Plymouth
NUMBER ENGAGED THIS WEEK THE presence of several horses from the Auckland Province at the Taranaki meeting to-morrow and on Saturday invests that fixture with considerable interest locally. The Taranaki Jockey Club retains a classic race on its programme, the Taranaki Stakes, six furlongs, and this has drawn a brilliant field of sprinters.
There is one aspect of the problem of sorting out winners that confronts the stay-at-home backer more than those at the scene of operations. The race-course at New Plymouth is not unlike that at Takapuna, with the exception of the straight run of a furlong and a half down the back. Therefore the draw at the. barrier playjs a not unimportant part, and this, combined with the fact that the home stretch is just under a furlong, makes the old adage, “first into the straight is first home” peculiarly applicable to this course.
The going at New Plymouth to-mor-row is sure to be hard, and when the meeting concludes there will be several additional sore horses for trainers to worry over. The acceptances are excellent, fine fields being engaged in the Cup and open sprint. A start is to be made at midday with the WAITARA HURDLES Of £150; 6 furlongs st. lb. st. lb. Ned Kelly . 10 9 Airtight . . 912 Powhiri . . 10 7 Elysianor. .99 Mountain Flowing Bell ... 10 5 Bowl .... 90 San Fera. 10 4 Royal Flight 9 0 Just John .. 9 12 A small field should see a true run contest, for big fields on this track in hurdles events are not wanted. Ned Kelly has shown some promise at the game and if started here in preference to his flat engagement he will be fancied. Powhiri has failed to repeat his Marton form, where he won both days, but he has a weaker field to-morrow. Mountain Bell has not been seen over the sticks for some while, although she is a good one when right. San JFera is coming back, and Just John has won over the sticks before on this track. Airtight and Elysianor are possibilities, and the Auckland owned Royal Flight went with the leaders at Hawera on Saturday. NED KELLY and POWHIRI will probably monopolise the betting market. NGAMUTU JUVENILE HANDICAP Of £200; 5 Furlongs. Gold Dawn . 8 11 Upoko .... 7 7 Tea Miss ..82 Egeria ... 7 0 Te Atiawa . 711 Agreeable ..70 Fermanagh . 7 8 Lady Quex . 7 0 Gold Dawn failed to produde the best at Hawera, and Tea Miss, who won on Saturday, reads much better. Te Atiawa has plenty of speed, and to-
morrow may be the day. Fermanagh is not reliable at the barrier, and on Saturday a good chance was spoilt through him getting mixed up in some trouble. Upoko failed twice last week, and of the others Agreeable reads the best. TEA MISS and FERMANAGH will be heavily supported. A dashing lot of sprinters is engaged in the FLYING HANDICAP Of £350; 6 Furlongs. The Hawk . 9 7 Tip Tree ... 7 6 Kiosk .... 9 3 High Rapine ... S 10 Finance ..76 Lady Caven- Melissa ... 7 3 dish .... 8 6 Orcades ... 7 0 Te Monanui 8- 3 Sea Star ..70 Oration ... 7 10 Quillfire ... 7 0 Town Bird .79 The Hawk is back almost to his best, and Kiosk has been under a cloud since the holidays. However, the latter must be all right again, otherwise his party would not run him; they are particularly averse to taking risks. Lady Cavendish can go as fast as any of them, but she is an Absurd mare, and they don’t improve with age. If in the mood, however, Lady Cavendish will take some heading. Oration likes his home course, and on this account cannot be Overlooked. Town Bird may find the company a bit select, and of the remainder a fancy is expressed for Tip Tree, High Finance (who will set a merry pace round the corners) anc Melissa. The last named should be a >
the better for her outing at Takapuna, and if she does not show up to-morrow she should be prominent on Saturday when the cracks go for the classic. Of Course this applies to others also. KIOSK and LADY CAVENDISH will no doubt be the favourities to-morrow. They are not a good lot left in the MOTUROA ELECTRIC HACK Of £200: 15 miles and 100 yards Merxcis ... 8 0 Yawl 8 0 Mendip ... 8 0 Resinous ... 80 Cadenza ... 80 Niazone ... 8 0 Aropeta ... 8 0 Fortalice ..80 Apaty .... 8 0 Mendip won on Saturday, and so is not eligible to run. RESINOUS (a half brother by Limond to Bathos) has a reputation, and he will not have to do much to head off MERXCIS and the other moderates. This brings us to the big event, the TARANAKI CUP Of £750; lj miles. Hynanna ..96 Bright Glow .81 Piuthair. . . 8 13 Goshawk . . 7 10 Eden Hall. . 8 7 Greengrocer .70 Yoma .... 8 4 Hipo .... 7 0 Transformer . S 2 Manly. ... 7 0 Mint Leaf. . 8 2 Vivo 7 0 It is a fine field, and probably as good as any that has contested the race. Included among them is' Yoma, the winner of the event two years ago,
when the field by a mistake in the barrier selected travelled nearly a furlong over the real distance. Hynanna, good horse, has the weight that goes with winning honours, and he will be a real good one if he is able to concede the poundage all round. Piuthair will be prominent if started, but the course will have to be in good order for her to go to the post. Eden Hall has been showing fine form of late, and he will be running on at the finish. Yoma showed signs of returning form, and
Transformer was a bit unlucky at Takapuna. Mint Leaf will not be suited by the track, although he has run well here. Bright Glow petered out at the end of the mile and a half at Hawera last week, and may do better over the shorter distance on Saturday. Goshawk will make a show, and he should see it out. Greengrocer too would stand a chance if the right boy can be secured to ride him at the minimum. Hipo may find it a bit far, and Manly and Vivo will probably be reserved for a later engagement. Manly reads like a promising lightweight. .It is an extremely difficult race to sum lip, but among those favoured are PIUTHAIR, EDEN HALL and YOMA. The middle distance hack event follows: OKATO HACK HANDICAP Of £175; 82 fur. Royal Acre . 9 2 Lady Killer .77 The Swell . . S 10 Sovena .... 7 5 Baby Bun ..85 Restaurant . 7 0 Kawhakina . 7 10 Resin .... 7 0 Whisogne ..79 Flying Shot . 7 0 Always .... 7 7 Silent .... 7 0 Miss Mercia . 7 7 The topweight has been running consistently of late, and the effect of several hard races may be telling its tale. The Swell made a big impression at Trentham, where he was indifferently ridden. Baby Bun figures in this event, and on her Takapuna showings should run well. Kawhakina is on the improve, and further down one pauses at Miss Mercia, Lady Killer, Sovena and Flying Shot. THE SWELL and BABY BUN look the form horses and will be backed accordingly. Another fine field is to be seen out, this time in the MIMI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Of £225; 7 fur. Tiega 9 5 Orazone ... 8 6 Paitonu ... 9 4 The Lamb ..86 Hipo 9 0 Manly .... 8 5 The Sea Star ..82 Immigrant. 811 The Swell . .0 8 2 Vivo 8 9 Quillfire ... 8 0 Monaghan ..89 Clengariff ..80 Partaga ... 8 6 Sovena ... 8 0 Sleepy Sol ..86 Tiega is a great weight carrier, and therefore after his win and second last week cannot be overlooked. Paitoriu has been something of a disappointment, and Hipo reads better here than in the Cup. The Immigrant won well
at Takapuna, and of the remainder a fancy is expressed for Vivo, Monoghan, Partaga, Sleepy Sol, Orazone, Manly, l The Swell and Quillfire. It is a partiI cularly open race, and among those that will be well backed could be men--aonedTHE IMMIGRANT and TIEGA. The first day closes with the TIMARU HACK HANDICAP Of £175; 6 fur. Royal Acre . 9 5 Marble Melissa ... 9 5 King ... 8 2 Ned Kelly . 8 13 Eka 8 1 Paul Upoko .... 7 5 Lucerne ..89 Yawl .... 7 2 Gold Dawn . 8 7 Monsogne ..70 Onward. ..S3 Dimmer. ..70 Patrolet ... 7 0 Auckland is directly concerned here in the performance of Dimmer, who was taken to Trentham, and on both occasions the grey gave trouble at the barrier and was left. More than half the field claim prior engagements, and thus the number may be considerablv reduced. PAUL LUCERNE and " EKA will be able to go fast round the small track. The meeting concludes on Saturday, when the principal event is the classic contest, the Taranaki Stakes, six furlongs, in which those left in are Silvermine, The Hawk, High Finance, Te Atiawa, (Gascony, Kiosk, Reremoana, Lady Cavendish, Tea Miss, Civility, Hoyal Ceres, High Disdain. This race will be dealt with later.
