GAY AND INFORMAL KIDDIES’ PARTY Before she left for Wellington to return to St. Mary’s College, Miss Aeila Patterson, who has been spending the school holidays with: her'aunt, Mrs. G. McLeod, at her home in Carmen Avenue, Dominion Road, was the guest of honour at a delightful party arranged by Mrs. lyicLeod. A large number of young friends of the guest of honour were invited and came to the party, where, in gay paper caps and with grotesque favours., of many kinds, they enjoyed themselves immensely. Mrs. McLeod welcomed the little guests, and was assisted by her niece, who wore a dainty frock of finelypleated ninon. The house was prettily decorated with streamers and ribbons and festoons of blue and gold flowers, and the table in the dining room, which was laden with a most wonderful party tea, was splashed with the gold and blue of liUes and cornflowers. Games were played hilariously on the lawn until tea was served, and afterewards competitions were held inside. Those successful In the girls’ competitions were: The Misses Kathleen Meikletfohn, Rita Brown, and Norma Nicholson. The boys* prizes were won . by Trevor Whaley and Jack Patterson. Among those present were: The Misses Betty Patterson, Patsy Patterson, Neila McLeod, Rita Browne (Napier), Kathleen Paul, Kathleen Meiklejohn, Mary Carroll, Lorna McLeod, Ethne Lee, Norma Nicholson, Gwen Howie, Ena Gladys Adams, Masters Neville Browne (Napier), Noel and Trevor Whaley, Jack and Percy Patterson, Robert and Eugene Adams, Donald Menzies and Lafirie Lee.
DELEGATE TO CONFERENCE AT HONOLULU MRS. T. E. TAYLOR Mrs. T. E. Taylor, Dominion president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, has been appointed to represent that body on the official delegation to the Women’s Pacific Confernce at Honolulu in August next. Mrs. Taylor has been asked to prepare the subject of “"Women in Social Service in New Zealapd” for the conference.
FORMAL GOWNS AT ROYAL WEDDING Formal gowns, many fashioned with short, graceful- trains, were worn by the guests at the wedding in Xaplcs of Anne de France to" the Duke of Apulia. The bride’s mother, the Duchesse de Guise, wore a lovely gown of black and gold lame becomingly draped on the left side and falling in a short train. The - bodice was arranged in-bolero fashion and finished with a buckle. The bride’s sister, Princess Francoise, chose an evening gown of pale blue lame woven with silver, with the dipping hem and yoke of tulle encrusted with strass. A folded girdle adorned the waist and fell in a train effect.
One of the lovely evening frocks designed for the bride was of cherry and silver lame with an*embroidery of diamante simulating a necklace and sciuare pendant The skirt was knifepleated on one side and was longer at the back than in front. *
The frocks worn by the bride at the wedding ceremonies were fashioned on current modes were fashioned on court ceremonial. Family jewels were worn and lovely old lace such as Chantilly, point d’Angleterre and Alencon were displayed.
GARDEN PARTY AT OHAKUNE A garden party under the auspices of the Women’s Christian Temperanc*Union Was held last week in the grounds of Mrs. Ford’s residence at J Ohakune. The weather was ideal for i the function, and a most enjoyable f time was spent by the large numb* i . who attended. Prior to the afternoon s*function IS.opening meeting of the union for 19- * was held, the president, Mrs. Grirhi. presiding. Mrs. Lynn, president of th* Hokitika Union, was present. Aftei devotional exercises by Ensign Lillingstone and Mrs. Lynn, the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A donation was received from Mr. T. S. Ward, for which he was sincerely thanked. The meeting terminated with prayer and praise. An enjoyable programme for the garden party had been arranged, including competitions, games and pastimes. The Rev. I. M. Raynor and Mr. Goodenough rendered valuable assistance in helping to run the croquet competitiohs. The following are the winners of the competitions:—Mrs. Sandford, Mrs. X. Brown, Miss Sandford, Miss Henderson. The stall was in the charge of Mrs. Sandford, hon. secretary, and Mrs. McDonald ran the epigram wheel. An enjoyable tea was provided, many helpers of the union and thetr friends giving valuable assistance. The funds of the union will be considerably augmented as a result otthe event. • The union extended a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Ford for the use of her ‘ grounds an'd also to all those who as- j sisted in making the function the great i success it proved to be.
