Magnificent Gift
HALF-MILLION FOR NATION ANONYMOUS DONOR By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. LONDON, Monday. A unique gift of £500,000 has been sent anonymously to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, is to be placed in trust for the benefit of the nation. The capital is to accumulate at compound interest for long period of years, and ultimately together with the accrued proceeds it will be applied to the reduction of the national debt. The bankers, Messrs. Barin Brothers, who will hold the money, have also forwarded a letter from the donor, in which he says gifts to the nation of historic sites and of works of art are happily frequent, but gifts to repay the national debt are comparatively rare. The donor‘expresses the hope that others from time to time will be prompted to add to or establish similar funds, and that citizens and the city will unite in an attempt to free the country from debt. Mr. Churchill, on behalf of the Government in publicly acknowledging the gift, says it is important and unprecedented in character. He regrets that he is unable to thank the donor by name. —A. and N.Z. rK rlt rlr fir dr
