“WINGS”

BATTLE IN THE AIR Men jumping from two ignited balloons, with, airplanes darting and diving around them, constitutes one of the most remarkable scenes ever filmed. William Wellman obtained this in Texas, for one of the highlights of “Wings,” which he directed for Paramount’s great epic of the air. Perfect timing on the part of assistants and members of the cast, including Charles Rogers and Richard Arlen, featured players in the production, enabled Wellman to get exactly what he desired for the scenes after weeks of preparation. The action called for the destruction of two balloons by fliers. At the starting signal, given to the pilots by radio, the planes dived down r.nd opened fire. Observers in the baskets took their signal, tumbled over the sides, fumbling at their parachute release cords, and a second later two tremendous sheets of flame above them lashed at the landing gears of the “ships” as they wheeled and skimmed out of danger. Eleven cameras caught the action which boasted of one of the greatest scenes ever filmed and not one of the participants suffered so much as a scratch.
