HORSES LEAVE FOR WINGATUI
FANCIES FROM RICCARTON MONEY ORDER AND FIRST SIGHT (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. As was predicted several days ago, the two-year-old Silver Pape* will be given a lengthy spell. Though it was thought the youngster would be fit to race in the autumn, his connections are wise in retiring him for the remainder of the season. A few days before the running of the Wellington Stakes Silver Paper galloped in outstanding style over three furlongs at Trentham, but on cooling down he displayed distinct signs of lameness, which was traced to a splint, and he therefore was unable to contest the important Trentham classic race. He has made great improvement since his return to Riccarton, but no risks are to be taken with the Paper Money youngster. He will be railed to Central Otago in a few days time, there to be spelled on his owner’s property for some months, after which he will be prepared for spring engagements. TEAMS FOR WINGATUI E. Scoullar left for Wingatui to-day with Countersign and Rotor, who will compete at the .Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Other Riccarton trainers who left for Dunedin to-day were: T. H. Gillett (Money Order and Satrap), W. G. Hobbs (Luminarit), W. McDonald (Koauau), and H.. Cutts (Sudden Storm, Front Rank, Skyquest, Quarterdebk, Full Feather and Impertinence). The Thurnham filly Luminant, who left for Wingatui to-day, has galloped in improved style during the past month. She has also put on a lot of condition, and provided she runs up to her best track form she will be hard to dispose of in her Dunedin engagements. Luminant galloped nicely over six furlongs on Saturday morning, and she should be capable of gaining a place in the President’s Handicap on Thursday next. BACK TO FORM Though he has let his supporters down on two occasions this season Silver Coot is a much fitter horse, now than he was when he competed at Ashburton last month. His track gallop over six furlongs on Saturday morning was an amazingly good effort, and it certainly seems as if this Paper Money three-year-old will more than pay his way at Dunedin. He will, be a runner in the Publicans’ Handicap on Thursday next, and he should race prominently with such a luxurious impost as 7.0. Notwithstanding that the Quin Abbey gelding Stormy had to be eased in his work before the Wellington meeting, lie has come on a good deal lately, and
is more forward than his appearance | suggests. One fallacy that often misleads backers is that a horse must be | thoroughly seasoned to win. This may be the case in long-distance events, but in sprint races a good many horses will run particularly well when fresh. As Stormy is very well just now’ he may do a lot better than generally expected in the Publicans’ Handicap at Wingatui this week. THORNDALE AND THE CUP Thorndale’s poor gallop over seven furlongs with Nincompoop on Saturday morning would be disconcerting to his Dunedin Cup admirers, but as he appears very well to the eye it may be unwise to take his track performance on its face value. Thorndale is a much improved horse this season, and.fit and well on the day, a minor place in the Dunedin Cup may not be beyond him. Money Order’s gallop over six furlongs on Saturday morning was an effort brimful of merit, and though he was not hunted out over the last bit after running the first four furlongs in 49, he recorded 1.55 3-5 for the full journey with comparative ease. Money Order is easily the best short-distance galloper in the South Island, and though he will carry the steadier of 9.9 at Dunedin on Thursday his class places him head and shoulders above his opponents, and he promises to w r ind up a firm favourite for the thief Wingatui sprint race. SMART YOUNGSTER The brilliant gallop of the tw ro-year-old Full Feather over half a mile on Saturday, which distance was traversed in 49, is proof that the Autumnus colt is improving with each sprint. As he has made great advancement since competing at the Trentham meeting, he is bound to take all kinds of beating in the Champagne Stakes at Dunedin on Thursday. Arikiwai’s good effort over nine furlongs on Saturday morning is gaining him many admirers for his Dunedin engagement, and though the distance of the big Southern handicap may be a trifle far for him at present, he should race prominently on the concluding day of the meeting. Both Satrap and Countersign are popular with backers for the Dunedin Cup, and though the three-year-old has done well enough of late, Countersign should prove the better investment on Thursday. Limerick is in great fettle just now, and he should have little difficulty in adding the Hazlett Memorial to his long list of records. PLACED RIGHT The tliree-year-old First Sight, who was successful at Trentham, has made a great improvement since his return to Riccarton, and the President’s Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday is voted as almost a good thing for the Gay Lad gelding. Goblin Market bore 'a very bright and healthy appearance before he left for Wingatui, and his meeting with Full Feather in the Champagne Stakes is causing any amount of interest in Southern racing circles. On Wellington running there is little between the pair, and as both are improving yougsters they should be capable of good efforts. The Tractor gelding Rotor galloped in brilliant fashion over four furlongs on Saturday morning last, and he should show to advantage in his Wingatui engagements.
