Earthquake at Opotiki.—A sharp earthquake shock was felt at Opotiki at 1.30 p.m. on Sunday. Watching Fires—Owing to the continued drought the Whangarei Borough Council has decided to organise the services of all borough employees for fire-fighting purposes. Fall From Ladder.—A small boy, the son of Mr. Horace Tombs, of Hamilton, fell off a ladder at his home, on Sunday, and broke his right arm. He is now in the Waikato Hospital. Fire at Devonport.—An electric iron left with the current switched on. when Mr. H. H. Watkins and his family went out, caused «t fire at 22 Ascot Avenue, Devonport, u little after p.m. yesterday. The lire brigade confined the damage to one room. Man Electrocuted. —A young man named Claude lngley was electrocuted while working on a power line in W.~itohu Valley this morning. He was lengthening the jumpers when he got a shock, and death was instantaneous. Deceased’s parents live at Whakatane. Chance for Youth.—A youth whose name was suppressed was charged at the Police Court this morning on two charges of theft, involving 19s, and one of attempted theft. As he suffered from fits, the magistrate adjourned the case for 12 months. Remand on Theft Charge.—A charge of breaking and entering, and stealing a quantity of wire valued at 3:=. was preferred against William Henry Mundev (58> in the Police Court this morning. He was remanded until Monday. Tramcars Held Up.—The short-cir-cuit of a feeder cable at the top of Anzac Avenue, near the Supreme Court, held up tramcars on the Remuera and Great South Road runs from 5.30 to 6.15 p.jn. yesterday. A section of tbo Beach Road section was also affected. Services Appreciated.—The Whangsrei Borough Council, at its meeting on Monday evening, “placed on record its appreciation of the services of the late Mr. J. E. Willcocks as sanitary inspector. The Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brak**. said it would be impossible to find in the whole of trie Dominion a man more devoted *to his duties. Farms for Unemployed.—A conference of local body delegates and others interested is to be held on Tuesday for the purpose of discussing the farmlet scheme as published some time ago by the Auckland Civic League. It is proposed to discuss the scheme thoroughly and elect a committee to carry out preliminary works.
