State Forest Danger
GRAVE FIRE RISKS Waimamaku Outbreak THE destruction of three acres of the Waipoua State forest draws attention to the grave danger to which the whole of the forest is exposed by fire. Valued at £500,000 for royalty the whole of this magnificent reserve might easily be destroyed as a result of the action of a careless visitor oft the new tourist road which penetrates this bush. -•
The Sun hAs been informed that this danger is ever-present owing to the rubbish on either side of the road exposing the forest to grave menace. A lighted match, or a carelessly thrown cigarette end, would, it is stated, set this tinder ablaze. No • kauri trees, fortunately, were destroyed in last week’s fire, which took place at the Waimamaku end of the forest. The Are broke out on Thursday afternoon, and by Friday had assumed dangerous proportions. Settlers and workmen combined to fight the flames, and by Saturday the outbreak was under control. It is thought that the fire originated on the edge of the bush sweeping
the slopes of the Waimamaku "Valley. In one place it crossed the road, and the dense smoke prevented vehicles from passing. Motorists who passed along the tourist road on Saturday reported that stuihps and logs were still smouldering; When the matter was referred to Mr. R. D. Campbell, conservator of forests, Auckland, he said that every precaution was being taken to prevent any further Outbreaks. He was informed by telegram, he said to-day, that the outbreak was under control. M.r. Campbell, would not discuss the - possibilities of danger, but declared 'that four men were patrolling the forest. This is one in excess of the usual number, and Mr. Campbell says he will keep the extra ranger there on patrol- duty as long as the dry weather lasts. The'fact that no rain of appreciable proportions has fallen in the Waimamaku area for some considerable time is an important factor in the safety of this beautiful belt of State forest.
