"I HATE THAT PHRASE!"
CANON JAMES SPEAKS ON NEXT WAR “I harte that phrase, ‘tine ncart war!’” said Canon James, vicar of ft Mary’s Cathedral, when speaking froß the pulpit yesterday at the speatf memorial service to the lat© Bari Haig. “We have to hope and rfrfw that there never will be another war. It has been shown to us during th* past 13 years that war is a monstrous evil which civilised people should have outgrown with the relics of barbarism.” Canon James acknowledged tha r . the causes of war, in national selfishness, international jealousy, suspicion, hatred and fear, still existed, and a quarrel might be thrust upon th* world at any time. Trade and w* struggles went on and governed our national policies. It had been said that merchants made war and soldiers made peace, and he was inclined to believe that there was a great deal in the sayinfComplete disarmament might make for war rather than avoid it at this juncture, and it was disquieting to realise that there were many goo 3 Christian people in the Dominion a opposition to our system which required all young men to have at least the rudiments of military training. “I am convinced, however, that* strong, sane public opinion demands the efficiency of what are so proper!? called ’defence’ measures in New Zea* land,” he said, “so that if ever as ßl3 the horrible menace of war blackens the sky every able-bodied man m** find himself trained and ready to dote* part of every self-respecting man » such a need.”
