SOUTHERNERS GOING TO ENGLAND (From Our Own Correspondent) PAEROA, Saturday. The big cycling gala by the Paeroa Athletic Club to-day, at Paeroa, had a championship flavour about it. There was a large attendance and some exceptionally fine racing was witnessed. w . Mackie, the crack Christchurch cyclist, who intends to sail shortly for England and France to compete in some of the leading cycling events made an appearance, and this fact alone created a deal of interest among the fans. In the twomiles’ handicap he started from 50yds. behind scratch and managed to be with the leaders 200yds. from the finish.
Unfortunately, lie lost a pedal and had to be contented with fourth place. In the five miles event, however, he gave a fine exhibition, and starting from 100) yards behind scratch made up his leeway with remarkable rapidity, winning with a great burst of speed. Again at the 3i miles, Mackie won well from the back mark. The chief results are as follow: One Mile Cycle Handicap. —First heat: \V. Godkin, 180yds, 1; W. Francis, 120yds, 2; C. Chisholm, ISOyds, 3.
