THE TE KUITI CASE DETENTION ORDERED The Te Kuiti cases of misappropriations . from the Racing Club, and of rents collected on trust, were dealt with finally this morning at the Auckland Supreme Court when Leonard Christian Harton was sentenced by Mr. justice Reed. Prisoner was represented by Mr. Findlay* who pleaded for leniency in the form of sentence. Replying to a question by his Honour counsel stated that prisoner’s salary was something trifling—about £SO a year. Prisoner had gone to Te Kuiti, which was then a growing town, in 1911, but he had become financially embarrassed after the war, and finally started the ; defalcations which spread over two. .years. Sickness and family responsibilities had caused these and lia had taken to drinking, but was now a Very sick man. Hisj Pjonour said he could not see his way. to give probation. Prisoner had been stealing racing club funds and misappropriating trust funds for a period of two years. The sentence would be two years’ reformative detention.
