PIONEER OF AUCKLAND
DEATH OF MR. W. CULPAN A PROMINENT BOWLER A prominent bowler and a. resident of 70 years’ standing in Auckland, Mr. William Culpan, died on Saturday morning. A son of the late Mr. William Culpan, who arrived here in the ship Jane Gifford, the late Mr. Culpan was the first organist the city knew'. He was born in Auckland on November 3, 1850, and was for some time a law accountant with Messrs. Hesketh and Richmond. Later he‘established himself as a real estate agent and valuer. For over 33 years he was organist and choirmaster 'at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Mr. Culpan was the oldest living member of the Auckland Bowling Club, which he joined in 1872. He was a member up to the time of his death. He was three times president, in 1905, and 1906, and again on the occasion of the diamond jubilee in 1921. After that he was elected a life member.' Deceased was also one of the founders of the New Zealand Old Colonists’ Association. He took an active part in the gatherings, and was for many years vice-president and chairman of the executive committee. He was also one of the original members of the Auckland Club. His wife predeceased him two years ago, and he is survived by two sons and one married daughter. As a mark of respect the Auckland Bowling Club will not be opened until at 2 p.m. and at 2.30 the funeral will will be held at St. Andrew’s Church at 22 p.m. and at 2.30 the funeral will leave for Purewa Cemetery.
