AN EXPENSIVE JOKE
FALSE CALL FOR TAXIS YOUTH FINED £5 Benjamin Valentine Bushel!, aged 19, was employed unt(! recently as a clown at Luna Park. Unfortunately for himself He played the role once too often and to-day found himself in the Police Court. Ho was charged with making a fals*' statement over the telephone so as fo cause three taxis to be sent to Devonport. Chief-Detective Hammond said the offence was a difficult one to detect On the night of January 8, the Rod Top Taxis were telephoned and asked to send three cars to Devonport. The Diamond Taxis were also asked to send four cabs, but they refused. When tlio three taxis arrived at Devonport from Auckland It was found that they had been hoaxed. The defendant said he did it for a joke “Very well, you will pay a fine of £2 and £2 17s 6d towards the costs of the taxis,’* said Mr. F. K~ Hunt, S.M. “Will you suppress my name?” asked the defendant. “No, I won’t. You did it for a joke, so now you can see your name in the papers for a. joke,” replied the magistrate.
