FATAL HOLIDAY TRIP
CAR- TURNS SOMERSAULTS WHANGAREI MAN KILLED (From .Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. Victor Beaston, of Whangarei, aged 55, was killed yesterday afternoon by the overturning of a motor-car in which his wife, two sons, a grandchild and a friend, Mr. A. J. Stewart, were returning after a day’s outing at Whananaki Beach. Deceased was driving and had left Whananaki about four o'clock. The road was greasy from the rain and the back wheels skidded when approaching the ascent of the hill. It is supposed that at the moment of changing the gears the car slipped back over the edge of the road and completely capsized, somersaulting three times in the fall of 15ft. All the other occupants were thrown out and escaped unhurt. Beaston’s head was crushed and he was brought to his own home by the driver of a following car. Medical opinion is that death must have been instantaneous. Deceased was an old and highly-esteemed member of the Whangarei Fire Brigade, oti which he was deputy-superintendent.
