PUPILS’ LAST TRIBUTE

MR. J. DRUMMOND’S FUNERAL REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDANCE A touching tribute to the late Mr. James Drummond, for the past two years headmaster and formerly a pupil of the school, was paid by pupils of the Auckland Grammar School when they lined the roadway near his late residence yesterday. Mr. George Baildon, Mayor of Auckland, Mr. H. B. Burnett, secretary of the Harbour Board, Canon H. K. Archdall, headmaster of King’s College, members of the Auckland Grammar Schools Board of Governors, headmasters and headmistresses of other Grammar Schools of Auckland, and other representatives of educational and public life were present at the funeral. The Rev. F. Barton, of St. Stephen s Presbyterian Church, Ponsonby, conducted a short service in the house and paid a tribute to the fine character of the late Mr. Drummond. His great influence on the boys who had been under his charge, said Mr. Barton, would live beyond the grave. At the close of the service the coffin was borne out of the house and the guard of honour came to attention. Messrs. P. Drummond, a brother of the late Mr. Drummond and an assistantmaster at the Grammar School, Messrs. J. B. Johnston, W. Johnston, H. J. D. Mahon. the acting-headmaster, H. Schmidt and B. Schmidt were the pallbearers. Hundreds of boys from the school who had come to pay a last tribute were drawn up on both sides of Jervois Road. The cortege then moved off to Waikumete. The top of the hearse was covered with beautiful wreaths and another car which followed was filled with magnificent floral emblems. The funeral procession was very long, and some time after the hearse had turned into Jervois Road, cars were still leaving the residence. Mr. Barton conducted the burial | service at the graveside.
